Johannesburg -

A few weeks ago she accused her of being an unfit mother, saying she too abused her children and belonged in jail. But it all changed this week.

The aunt of a Springs man accused of abusing his children alongside his wife said she had forgiven the mother.

“She has nowhere to go. We all make mistakes. We are all that she has at the moment. Even her family has turned their backs on her,” the woman said speaking from her home in the area.

She repeated what she told the court this week, saying she regarded the woman as her own daughter.

In the past, the couple lived with their children in the aunt’s home before moving to other houses in the area, including the “house of horror” on Plantation Road where the man had allegedly held the family captive.

But it was when her nephew was arrested and tried committing suicide in the magistrate’s court cells that the aunt expressed her anger at the situation.

She had also added her nephew was not a monster, as portrayed in the media.

Asked what led to her sudden change of heart, she said: “I was angry at the time. But I’ve forgiven her.”

When the Saturday Star visited the house the mother sat inside. The aunt said she was fine and so were the children who are in the care of other relatives.
