Potchefstroom - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a case of suicide after an awaiting trial inmate was found dead in the holding cells at Bloemhof police station.

In a statement on Tuesday, North West police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said the 52-year-old prisoner was arrested on January 9 for an alleged domestic violence related assault charge.

Mokgwabone said he appeared in court on January 11. The case was postponed to January 13 for a formal bail application.

“According to information, he allegedly used inmates mattress cover string to commit the suicide,” Mokgwabone said.

Ipid was summoned when the inmate's body was discovered after his court appearance on Monday.

An inquest has been opened.
