Johannesburg - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has fired its head of investigations, Matthews Sesoko, after he was found guilty of gross misconduct in a disciplinary inquiry.

This relates to his role in the dismissal of several of the police’s top brass involved in the rendition saga including Hawks provincial head Shadrack Sibiya.

Sesoko was suspended last year after he was charged for misconduct involving dishonesty and defeating the ends of justice along with suspended Ipid head Robert McBride.

The two men were accused of altering the first rendition report, which recommended that both Sibiya and former head of the Hawks Anwa Dramat be criminally charged for their role in the illegal rendition of Zimbabwean nationals.

The first report, signed by Innocent Khuba, the Limpopo head of Ipid, recommended that Dramat and Sibiya be criminally charged for their role in the rendition.

However, a few months later, in a second report co-signed by McBride, the duo was cleared.

Sibiya was fired last year after he was found guilty of playing a part in the illegal rendition of Zimbabweans, while Dramat was suspended.

Dramat was later reinstated after the court found his suspension was unlawful but he resigned last year.

On Wednesday, Ipid acting head Israel Kgamanyane said he had noted the outcome of the dismissal of Sesoko.

Ipid’s acting spokesman Robbie Raburabu said: “The chairperson of the disciplinary hearing found him guilty as charged and pronounced a sanction of dismissal on Tuesday. The acting director (Kgamanyane) of Ipid has confirmed the dismissal sanction as pronounced by the chairperson, effective yesterday (on Wednesday).”
