Cape Town – A concealment of birth case has been opened at the Somerset West police station after the body of a newborn baby was found dumped near Sir Lowry’s Pass on Sunday.

Western Cape Department of Social Development spokesperson Sihle Ngobese said in the statement that the department was assisting the police in the investigation after residents of Rasta Park in the Sir Lowry’s Pass area found the body on Sunday and alerted authorities.

Ngobese said: “DSD strongly condemns any action which places the lives of babies and children at risk. There is no excuse for the dumping and abandoning of babies and children.”

Ngobese added that “pregnant mothers and prospective parents need not feel trapped and without options” as DSD, in conjunction with other departments and NGOs, rendered a basket of psycho-social and child protection support services to prospective and new parents.
