Pretoria - A couple accused of abusing a two-year-old girl appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Monday, SABC news reported.

The matter was postponed to January 14 for their bail application.

Linda Bruyns, 20, and her boyfriend Christo Conradie, 33, were arrested last Friday after the baby was admitted to hospital with serious head and body injuries.

According to The Star the child had broken ribs, a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, a punctured pancreas and kidney, severe bruising all over the body, and suspected brain damage.

The newspaper reported that according to the girl's father, a doctor said it was impossible she had sustained her injuries falling down the stairs as the boyfriend had claimed.

Police spokeswoman Lt-Col Katlego Mogale told the paper that a doctor called the police after examining the child as some of the injuries were old and had never been reported. -Sapa
