Durban - Eight of the nine people arrested by the Hawks and charged with money laundering and operating a brothel from a La Lucia home they rented from Durban businesswoman, Rosanne Narandas, were this week granted bail.

The nine were arrested after a complaint last month by Narandas, who had rented out her holiday home via a letting agency.

The alleged kingpins, Winston Everton, 46, and his ex-wife, Karen Everton (no age given), are said to have rented the property. They were granted R20 000 bail each on Monday in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

Everton listed his residential address as Lady Ellen Crescent, La Lucia, while his ex-wife’s address was listed as Eastwood, Pietermaritzburg.

The five women, Mikaela van der Westhuizen, 32, Jolene Taliep, 34, Michelle McGregor, 39, Charlotte Cilliers, 39, and Kim Khoury (no age given), suspected of being prostitutes, were granted R1 000 bail each at the weekend.

Van der Westhuizen, who lived at the La Lucia house, appeared with the Everton couple, as well as Ifeanyni Hilary Ahanonu, 27, and Mandla Vezi, 53.

Magistrate Mohamed Motala granted Vezi R10 000 bail.

Ahnonu is still in custody and was expected to appear in court today for bail consideration.

Four of the women were due to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, however, Khoury was absent.

The magistrate warned the three women - Talipe, McGregor and Cilliers - to appear in court today with the others and a warrant for Khoury’s arrest was stayed until Thursday.

The nine are charged with money laundering and for contravening provisions of the Sexual Offences Act.

Ahanonu is also charged with dealing in ecstasy and being in possession of dagga. Winston Everton also faces charges of being in possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
