A couple in their 50s died after they were stabbed during a house robbery at their Airfield home in Benoni, The Star newspaper reported on Friday.

Constable Tim Masilela said three men armed with knives arrived at the family home on Tuesday evening, when owner John Collen, 55, tried to protect his family he was stabbed repeatedly and his throat was slit.

When his wife Sue ran into the house to get help she was chased by a second man who stabbed her and tried to slit her throat.

She died in ICU from her injuries on Thursday.

According to Masilela all this happened in the presence of their daughter-in-law Vivienne Haydock, 44.

She had been protecting her own daughter when the three took her and her mother-in-law's jewellery and cellphone before fleeing. - Sapa
