Johannesburg - A shop owner shot dead an alleged robber and wounded another at his bottle store in Watville, Benoni, Ekurhuleni police said on Wednesday.

Four men entered the 68-year-old businessman's shop on Tuesday afternoon and allegedly pointed a firearm at him, tied up him and his staff, and started taking cash from the till and alcohol and cigarettes from the shelves, said Captain Mack Mngomezulu.

“When they were about to leave the shop, the owner managed to untie himself, took his firearm and shot two suspects a few metres from the shop.”

One of the men died at the scene. He was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The businessman then reported the incident to police and told them that he shot another one of the robbers.

On Tuesday evening, the police found the other alleged robber with a gunshot wound at a hospital in Springs.

He matched the description given by the shop owner, said Mngomezulu.

The other two robbers were arrested on Tuesday night. They were found in possession of two firearms and ammunition.

All three men would appear in the Benoni Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The shop owner would not face any charges, said Mngomezulu.
