Durban - The abandoned baby boy who was dumped on the side of a Pinetown road in a bin bag is now “doing well”.

This was the update on Thursday from the Pinetown Highway Child and Family Welfare Society, which is looking after the infant while the search for his parents continues.

The baby was taken to Crompton Hospital after an ADT security guard, Musawenkosi Khumalo, and a postman heard the infant’s wails from inside a double-knotted plastic bin bag on Wednesday.

He was found in the nick of time, just before the council’s garbage truck came along Maurice Nicholas Road to collect refuse bags.

Speaking on behalf of the hospital, regional marketing manager for Life Healthcare Leanne Nyiri said the baby was taken to the accident and emergency unit.

“The healthy baby boy, wrapped in a baby blanket, was examined by one of the paediatricians and was bathed and given first immunisations and antibiotics by paediatric staff,” she said.

The umbilical cord was still attached.

“The baby was dressed in a babygro and wrapped in a blanket before staff (from child welfare) fetched the baby. They will be dealing with the matter,” Nyiri said.

The organisation confirmed that the “beautiful baby boy” weighing 2.5kg, was brought to their offices.

“The child was medically assessed and reported to be well. The child has been placed temporarily with a foster parent screened by the (child welfare) society. A children’s court inquiry will be opened pending further investigations,” the organisation said in response to Daily News enquiries.

An advert would be placed in a local newspaper encouraging the mother to come forward so the necessary intervention could be provided.

“Further medical assessments will be taken if necessary. For now, the baby is called Siyamthanda Majozi,” child welfare said.

Police said they had not traced the mother yet.
