VIP protection driver Joseph Semitjie, who is accused of knocking a West Rand teenager off his motorcycle, appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Charges of reckless and negligent driving were read to him.
Magistrate AK Khan postponed the case to October 3 for trial.
Semitjie was warned to appear. He was not in custody.
A huge group of family and friends were at the court to support the VIP protection unit policeman.
Thomas Ferreira was hit by a VIP vehicle linked to Gauteng local government and housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi in November 2011.
Ferreira was in a coma in hospital for a while and has apparently suffered permanent physical damage because of the accident.
A lawyer for the Ferreira family was at the court, but not the family.
Ferreira received an interim payout of around R800 000 from the Road Accident Fund for hospital expenses.
Earlier, in reply to a question by the DA, Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane said she refused to allow the Ferreira issue to be politicised.
She said she would honour her promise to ensure that all Ferreira's expenses were paid. – Sapa
