Johannesburg - The driver of a blue-light vehicle accused of knocking West Rand teenager Thomas Ferreira off his motorcycle is due to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Ferreira, 19, was hit by Gauteng Local Government and Housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi's VIP vehicle. The police's VIP unit member Joseph Modomai Semietjie was allegedly driving the BMW X5.

The November 2011 accident left Ferreira comatose, brain-damaged and in need of long-term rehabilitation. He spent weeks in a coma after the accident, and faces expensive, long-term rehabilitation.

Beeld newspaper reported on June 6 that Ferreira had been given an interim payout of R870 000 by the Road Accident Fund. - Sapa
