Two VIP Protection Unit members facing charges relating to a blue-light incident in 2008 in which six people were injured on the N3 will know their fate on July 9, when judgment in the matter is to be handed down.
It was set down for on Tuesday in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court, but was adjourned.
Hlanganani Nxumalo is charged with six counts of attempted murder and unlawfully discharging a firearm while the driver of the blue light vehicle, Caiphus Ndlela, is charged with reckless and negligent driving.
The evidence led during the trial was that Nxumalo fired two shots into the air because, according to him, the driver of another car had been “braking in front of him, switching lanes and trying to push his vehicle off the road”.
As the thunderous sound of the gunshots echoed through the air, the driver of the other vehicle, Anuvasen Moodley, lost control. It veered onto the median and into oncoming traffic, colliding with a bakkie. Six people were injured.
