Marikana - The bodies of two men suspected of stealing from a local shop were found in a lake at a dam in the North West, police said.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko said the bodies were found in a lake at a dam in Marikana on Sunday 3 January.

“It is alleged that the two were thrown into the lake to drown by a group of community members. The two were accused of stealing from a local shop,” said Ramaloko.

He said the men were allegedly caught with some items from the shop on Friday afternoon, by a shop owner who alerted the community.

“It is not yet clear what the men were stealing at the time. It is reported that the community assaulted the men, tied their hands before throwing them into the lake.”

Ramaloko said two counts of murder have been opened, but no arrests have been made yet. Investigations are under way.

The police have requested that communities refrain from taking the law into their own hands, as it would land them in trouble with the law.
