KwaZulu-Natal - Two men were arrested after the body of a woman was found in a shallow grave in Esikhawini, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.
Captain Thulani Zwane said the body was found by municipal workers who were working in a forest on Tuesday.
“It is alleged that the workers saw a shallow grave in the forest and they became suspicious. They then dug it and they saw parts of a human being,” Zwane said in a statement.
“The police attended to the complaint and dug the grave. The decomposed body of a woman was found and a murder case was opened at Esikhawini police station for further investigation.”
Zwane said the body was identified as a 22-year-old student at Esikhawini FET College, Londiwe Mngomezulu.
Mngomezulu's boyfriend, 24, was arrested after community members handed him over to the police.
“A second suspect, 22, was later arrested and both will be charged with murder, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice,” said Zwane.
The men are expected to appear in the Esikhawini Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
“The motive of killing the woman is unknown.”
Zwane said Mngomezulu was reported missing by her parents on February 16.
She was last seen with her boyfriend and her parents suspected that he had kidnapped her. - Sapa
