Durban -

A man’s body has been found with severe head injuries at the Chartford Drive football ground in Phoenix.

A security guard from the Phoenix SPCA found the body early on Saturday, which was lying face down with blood at the back of his head, according to ward councillor Tino Pillay.

“The police informed me of a dead body they discovered about 400m from my home early on Saturday,” he said.

“When I got there I saw the deceased was an Indian male - possibly in his 40s - neatly dressed in formal trousers and shirt. He was lying flat, face down, and there was blood at the back of his head. There was a broken plank nearby.”

Pillay said the man could have been killed in the late hours of Human Rights Day.

“The blood stains looked fresh and his body didn’t show signs of decomposition. He may have been killed late on Friday night, or early Saturday. It was shocking that the mortuary van took so many hours to fetch the body.”

SAPS police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that a case of murder had been opened.

“The body of a male was found in the vicinity of Chartford and Avonford in Phoenix. It was reported to the police station around 7am on Saturday by a worker from the SPCA site,” he said.

The man has not yet been identified. No arrests have been made and the motive for the killing is unknown.
