Body of a newborn found in plastic bag in Free state

Cape Town – Police in the Free State are searching for the mother of an unknown newborn baby whose body was discovered by a homeless man in Hilton.

According to police spokesperson, Constable Mosili Ntsika, at about 10:45am on Thursday, a homeless man was searching for food in Hilton when he spotted a fastfood paper bag inside a yellow plastic bag under a tree.

"He went on to open the paper bag hoping to find some food, only to discover the tiny body of a newborn baby lying facedown in a pool of blood."

The man alerted police who were patrolling in the area. Members of Navalsig police station drove to the open area in Signal Street, Hilton, where they found the body of a newborn baby boy and opened a case of concealment of birth.

"Anyone with information about the mother of the deceased newborn is requested to contact Detective Constable Teboho Makhethe on 072 447 7595 or Detective Constable Teboho Letshabo on 078 067 1676," said Ntsika.
