Kimberley - The body of a six-year-old boy has been found near a railway line in De Aar in the Northern Cape, police said on Friday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Olebogeng Tawana said that the body was found by passer-by dumped near the railway line in Friedlander Street on Thursday at about 7am. “We were immediately alerted and a manhunt has been launched,” said Tawana.

According to police, it is alleged that the boy was last seen on Wednesday evening in the company of a man believed to be the boy's mother's boyfriend, who has disappeared.

A case of murder has been opened. “We believe that he could assist the police in this case. Wherever he is, he should avail himself or report to the nearest police station or report at De Aar Police station.”

Tawana confirmed that the case was under investigation but that no suspect had yet been arrested. “We appeal to the public to assist the police with the information that might help to solve this case,” he said.
