File Photo - An anti-abortion activist holds clay dolls in the shape of foetuses during a protest.
A man accused of carrying out an illegal abortion appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court in Soweto on Wednesday, police said.
Ugandan Alex Kizito was expected to make a formal bail application on February 27, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.
Kizito allegedly claimed to be a doctor and carried out an abortion on a 21-year-old woman. The woman's mother apparently assisted with the abortion by cutting the umbilical cord.
Kizito is also charged with rape as he allegedly forced the 21-year-old to have sex with him before the abortion.
The aborted baby was wrapped in a plastic bag and dumped behind a toilet in Soweto.
The woman and her daughter were both charged with concealment of birth.
The women were granted R1000 bail each.
Makhubela said the three would appear in court on March 16. – Sapa
