Bloemfontein -

A Free State truck driver was tricked by bogus cops when he gave them right of way, thinking they were police officers rushing off somewhere.

The 34-year-old trucker saw, in his rear-view mirror, three white cars coming from behind and moved into the yellow lane to allow them to pass him.

But it all turned ugly when one of the cars with blue lights drove past the truck, then suddenly hit the brakes in front of it. The other two vehicles pulled off along the sides of the truck.

It was then that the truck driver realised he was about to be hijacked by a group of four armed men.

They were on the R26 between Reitz and Tweeling and the truck was carrying a cargo of maize meal for delivery to various supermarkets in the area.

The trucker managed to press a panic button before being taken out of the truck by the gang members.

According to police spokesman Sergeant Mmako Mophiring, the driver was handcuffed and placed inside one of the vehicles.

The hijackers drove the truck until they were approached by police, who were responding to the trucker’s alarm, at Tweeling.

Two men were arrested and two others fled.

They were still at large on Monday night.
