A Limpopo man, who pretended to be a priest, was sentenced to two life sentences in the Thohoyandou Regional Court on Thursday for the rape of two 14-year-old girls, police said.

Lt-Col Ronel Otto said 38-year-old Maemo Daniel Lebondu offered to pray for the sick father of the two girls on November 29, 2010.

Lebondu visited the home of the girls and raped both of them. He was arrested shortly after the incidents were reported to the police, said Otto.

On Thursday morning Lebondu appeared in court to be sentenced.

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Simon Mpembe said: “This heavy sentence handed down should serve as a warning and deterrent to would-be rapists.”

Otto said members of the Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit were investigating the possibility that Lebondu was involved in more incidents while he posed at a priest. - Sapa
