Potchefstroom - Four suspects who escaped from police custody in the North West on Boxing Day, appeared in the Mmabatho Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said Itumeleng Kgakane, 32, Johannes Moloisane, 47, Frans Lucky Makhutle, 24, and Joseph Tshaela, 38, were remanded until March 3.

The four were part of a group of five who escaped on Saturday.

“The suspects escaped from lawful custody on Saturday, 26 December 2015,” Mokgwabone said.

“They escaped through the roof after cutting the mesh wire.

“The first suspect was re-arrested immediately after the escape. The other three suspects were re-arrested later the same day while the fifth one was arrested on Sunday, 27 December, in the afternoon.”

At the time of escape, the suspects were facing charges including rape, robbery, murder, burglary, theft and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
