Durban - A second person involved in the tragic Boxing Day shooting died in hospital over the weekend.

A festive gathering turned into a bloodbath for a Chatsworth family when accused Maran Nair, 58, allegedly went on a shooting spree at their home, killing one person and critically injuring several others.

One of the critically wounded, Shunker Govender, 34, battled for eight weeks before he succumbed to his gunshot wounds on Saturday morning, said his sister, Vijay Appalsamy.

He was at RK Khan Hospital before being transferred to King Edward last Tuesday.

“He had not spoken to us since the shooting, and was breathing using a ventilator. His death left us heartbroken.” she said.

Appalsamy said police had taken statements from them and will add another charge of murder against Nair. Govender was cremated at the Mobeni Heights Cemetery on Monday.

Nair, who is at Westville Prison awaiting trial, is already charged with the murder of Kumari Samuel, 42, and the attempted murders of several others at a house in Montford, Chatsworth, on December 26.

However, in his affidavit supporting his bail application, Nair claims he was rushed by a mob and acted in self defence.

He further claimed to be in poor health and had no intention of committing a murder or attempted murders.

His bail application was adjourned for further medical investigation.
