A 13-year-old boy has been arrested for attempted murder after allegedly trying to poison his mother, Johannesburg police said on Sunday.
He allegedly stole R700 from his parents in their home in Protea Glen, Soweto, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.
While searching for the money on Friday, the boy's parents found he had rat poison. Later that evening, his mother was taken ill after drinking tea. She was rushed to hospital where she was in a critical condition.
The boy then apparently confessed to his father that he had poisoned the tea. He was arrested on Saturday and taken to a place of safety.
He was expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday. - Sapa
