Cape Town - A 14-year-old high school pupil “picked up” a 9mm pistol and allegedly used it to shoot two fellow pupils as they were all leaving school on Tuesday.

The victims, boys aged 15 and 13, were hit in the legs. They are in a stable condition at Groote Schuur Hospital.

All three are pupils at Oaklands High School in Racecourse Road, Lansdowne

The alleged shooter, who is in Grade 8, was arrested and will appear in court on Wednesday.

The shots were fired inside the taxi just beyond the school gates.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut said the incident occurred at around 3pm.

“The suspect… was arrested for attempted murder and will be treated as a juvenile offender,” Traut said.

Late on Tuesday afternoon, the school in Racecourse Road was swarming with police and the entrance gate was cordoned off.

A staff member turned away a Cape Argus team and refused to let us speak to the principal, who was standing a short distance away talking to police.

A man who lives near the school, who asked not to be named, said he saw an ambulance and police vehicles at the school, but did not know what had happened. The man said he had not heard any shots, but the whole school was cordoned off.

“I heard that there was a shooting and if there was a shooting I need to know, for the safety of my kids,” he said.

Bronagh Casey, spokeswoman for Education MEC Donald Grant said the Western Cape Education Department had provided support to the school and would have counselling services available for teachers and pupils on Wednesday.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to the two boys who are injured. A full report on the incident will be given to the ministry today.”

Groote Schuur Hospital’s Alaric Jacobs confirmed that the boys were in a stable condition.
