Cape Town - A primary school pupil is in a critical condition at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital after being knocked over by a car in an alleged hit- and-run incident on Tuesday.

The nine-year-old boy was in the intensive care unit, hospital spokeswoman Lauren O’Connor-May confirmed.

The boy was found lying in Baden Powell Drive in Stellenbosch. He was still wearing his school uniform.

ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson said paramedics had treated the boy for multiple injuries.

“An ER24 medical helicopter was called in to assist with the rapid transportation of the child to hospital. As AER24 landed on the scene, paramedics had placed the child on assisted ventilation equipment and he was then airlifted to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital for further care,” Jackson said.

Police are investigating.
