Johannesburg - The man accused of fatally stabbing his wife in Bryanston, Johannesburg, is expected back in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Yengesen Pillay will hear what the court has decided regarding arrangements for him to undergo mental observation to determine his ability to stand trial.

During the last appearance, prosecutor Yusuf Baba requested that the court refer Pillay for a 30-day mental observation following a referral from a Pietermaritzburg hospital.

Pillay was discharged from the hospital on August 21 where he was being treated after an alleged suicide attempt.

He went on the run after allegedly stabbing his wife Elmarie to death. The woman was found by a passerby. Paramedics said she had sustained around 50 stab wounds.

Pillay faced a schedule six murder charge for the incident.

If found guilty, he could face life imprisonment. - Sapa
