Johannesburg - The case of a man who allegedly stabbed his wife over 50 times was postponed in the Randburg Magistrate's Court, Johannesburg, on Thursday.

A bald-headed Yengesen Pillay, 42, dressed in a purple shirt and black jeans, made a brief appearance in court, where his case was postponed to September 30. He is charged with murder.

Pillay, who was earlier treated in hospital after an alleged suicide attempt, told the court he had yet to be medically assessed.

Prosecutor Yusuf Baba confirmed Pillay still needed to undergo a 30-day mental observation assessment. The process would commence in due course to determine his ability to stand trial.

Pillay allegedly repeatedly stabbed his wife. The Witness newspaper named her as Shareen Pillay, 41.

The dying woman was found at the boom gate of an office park at the corner of Peter Place and Karen Street, Bryanston, by a passer-by on Saturday, August 16. Paramedics said she sustained around 50 stab wounds.

According to The Witness the couple were from Pietermaritzburg but had been working and living in Bryanston, Johannesburg.

He was discharged from hospital on August 21 after being treated following an alleged suicide attempt after the stabbing.

Pillay faces a schedule six murder charge for the incident. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to life imprisonment.
