Durban - The shooting of two police officers in Bulwer was condemned by KwaZulu-Natal safety MEC Willies Mchunu on Monday.
“Police officers offer critical service to the communities and are the only line of defence between the communities and the heartless criminals,” said Mchunu.
“An attack on police is an attack against the government and the communities. Those responsible for this will face the full might of the law.”
The two officers were shot and wounded at the weekend as they responded to a robbery at a Chinese-owned shop.
Captain Thulani Zwane said the officers were confronted by 15 armed men.
“The two constables were shot in their legs and their firearms were taken,” said Zwane.
“The suspects took an undisclosed amount from the shop as well as airtime vouchers and chocolates before they fled in their getaway Colt bakkie.”
As the group fled the scene, they hijacked a second bakkie. Both vehicles were abandoned later and some of the stolen goods and cash was recovered.
The wounded officers are in a stable condition.
Mchunu wished them a speedy recovery and called on the public to assist them in catching the culprits.
