Two men were shot dead after a business meeting in an upmarket building in Cape Town’s city centre went sour, say police.

Police are now investigating the circumstances of the shooting in the Icon building on the Foreshore, during which a 37-year-old and another was killed.

On Thursday afternoon, police responded to the shooting in the third floor offices of Basileus Capital in the Icon building. They cordoned off the third floor for a few hours and no one was allowed in or out while they combed the scene.

Inside the offices they found the body of the 37-year-old. He had been shot in the heart and neck.

The other man had been shot in the head, but was alive when police arrived at the scene. He died later in hospital, they said.

Police could not confirm the age of the second man.

They did not release the men’s names because their families had not yet been informed last night.

Provincial police spokesman Warrant Officer November Filander said a 9mm pistol was found at the scene.

“At this stage we don’t know who fired what shots and to whom the pistol belongs,” said Filander.

He said it appeared the two men had had a business meeting.

Staff members had heard shots fired at about 5pm.

Police secured the third floor of the upmarket building on the corner of Hans Strijdom and Long Street.

“The staff remained behind for questioning,” said Filander.

The company said: “Basileus Capital chairman, James Ngculu, has confirmed that a shooting incident occurred at the Basileus Capital office in Cape Town.”

“Currently the matter is with the SAPS and no further statement will be released until further notice.”

Filander said police had opened a murder docket.

Basileus Holdings is the holding company for Basileus Capital which is the primary operational business within the Basileus Group.

Its website said Basileus Capital advises, organises, operates and supports the group’s investments and houses the group’s advisory, corporate finance, investment management, capital structuring and related skills.

The Icon building comprises flats, offices and retail shops.
