Pietermaritzburg - Businessman Rajiv Soni, 33, who thought former close friend Dr Bhavish Sewram was having an affair with his wife, hired hitmen to kill the doctor, the High Court in Pietermaritzburg heard on Monday.

Soni is expected to plead on Tuesday.

The State alleges that before the murder in May 2013 Soni laid false charges against Sewram. Sewram appeared in court but the charges were withdrawn.

After this, Soni allegedly hired hitmen to kill Sewram.

One of Soni's complaints against Sewram was sexual assault. Soni is also charged with bribing a woman to pose as a patient and then laying a charge of assault against Sewram.

Soni also allegedly bought a powerful paintball rifle which was loaded with solid projectiles.

As Sewram left his surgery, he was peppered by a hooded man and sustained multiple abrasions.

Soni is alleged to have paid former policemen Brian Treasurer R100 000 to arrange Sewram's murder.

Treasurer allegedly approached Mfaniseni Nxumalo and Sabela Dlamini to kill Sewram.

Dlamini shot Sewram dead as he left his surgery and was jailed for 25 years in a separate trial.

The case continues.
