Johannesburg - IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi has nominated Jeremy Gauntlett, SC, as a judge in the Constitutional Court.

“It gives me great pleasure to nominate advocate Jeremy Gauntlett... for appointment... to the Constitutional Court,” the Inkatha Freedom Party leader said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Advocate Gauntlett has one of the best legal minds in South African history.”

Earlier this month, Gauntlett was snubbed by the Judicial Service Commission for a position on the bench. It questioned whether he had the requisite “humility and the appropriate temperament”. The Sunday Times quoted Gauntlett as saying he was set to be nominated. Buthelezi said Gauntlett's patriotism was beyond doubt. “I have known him for 40 years and can personally vouch for it.”

Buthelezi said he had an exemplary conduct in court and had served many appointments for over 35 years.

“I am confident that the interests of the republic will be best served by having advocate Gauntlett serve in our highest court.”
