It is very surprising for me that Donovan Moodley claimed he was forced to admit to the crime.

Firstly, on arrest, he made the following remarks: “What took you so long? I was expecting you.”

He then took me to his room at his parents’ house and pointed out the firearm that was registered in his name as well as Leigh’s ring, which he kept in a CD cover.

This was recorded by a police photographer as proof of evidence.

The cartridges and bullets found on the crime scene were positively linked to his firearm.

Furthermore, he went on his knees in front of his parents and, in my presence, apologised to them for what he did, referring to Leigh Matthews.

Part of my evidence consisted of letters written by Moodley to his fiancée at that stage, parents and sister, where he asked them for forgiveness for what he did.

He pointed out where he burnt Leigh’s clothes, cellphone, motor vehicle keys and personal belongings to get rid of evidence.

Leigh’s burnt car keys was positively tested on her vehicle.

The burnt keys could start her vehicle and unlocked her car.

My personal viewpoint is that he admitted today (yesterday) in the high court that he is a liar due to the fact that he claims now that he lied in the beginning to the police and the courts; did not tell them the truth, then the possibility exists that he is doing the same today (yesterday) in the high court.

In my entire experience in the police force there was not one suspect who was innocent who pleaded guilty.

No person is forced in an open court to admit guilt if you are innocent.

That is the reason for a fair trial to prove your innocence from day one. It seems to me he is the only one in South Africa’s history who did it.

In general, I collected overwhelming evidence before I arrested him. It is impossible to distance himself from this evidence.

His inmate in jail is a Nigerian who was very close to co-operate with me to reveal the truth of what happened after the crime was committed and who assisted Donovan Moodley at the mortuary.

Unfortunately, he backed out, maybe too scared of what can happen to him in jail.

My hands were tied again not to get closure of what happened as per above.

Of course Donovan Moodley will not say any nice things about me, as no criminal will do so if they are convicted.

I am convinced that Leigh was already murdered when the ransom money was handed over to him because he was quite prepared to accept only the R50 000 in ransom and never demanded more money afterwards. - The Star
