Mahikeng - The murder of an elderly woman in Mahikeng was condemned by North West premier Thandi Modise on Tuesday.

“When the elderly are living in fear of being raped by children old enough to be their grandchildren in some instances, society should stand up to say enough is enough,” she said in a statement.

The 98-year-old was strangled at her home in Tloung village at the weekend. It was not clear whether she was raped before she was murdered.

Modise called on local residents to help police catch the killers.

She said people who targeted the vulnerable, particularly elderly women, should be permanently removed from society.

Police said the woman's grandson, who lived with her, found her body on Saturday.

Colonel Emelda Setlhako said the grandson was on his way to a funeral when he decided to check on his grandmother.

Earlier in the day, he had been in another room in the house when he heard something fall, but did not investigate.

He found her lying on the floor, covered with a blanket. There was dry blood on the mats and underneath the blanket. She had bruises on her face and strangulation marks on her neck. - Sapa
