Cape Town - As Metrorail continues to grapple with safety on trains, a 40-year-old commuter is recovering in hospital after being seriously injured when he fell from a moving train near Brackenfell train station on Tuesday.

Exact details of Tuesday’s incident were under investigation.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the man was in a critical condition after being “apparently thrown” from a moving train.

“ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene after the patient’s friend had apparently witnessed the incident.”

Meiring said the commuter had serious injuries to both his legs and one of his arms.

Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott said initial reports showed commuters had alerted Metrorail security to a person falling from the train’s open doors.

“Security investigated and summoned an ambulance.”

Scott said they had received no statements, nor have any witnesses come forward to indicate he had been thrown from the train.

Commuter watchdog the Public Transport Voice said pupils were also affected by unsafe rail conditions.

“Safety in the rail system is an issue which affects all commuters, but can be especially crucial for women.”
