Cape Town - A police officer from Parow, Cape Town, was arrested for alleged fraud and defeating the ends of justice on Friday, Western Cape police said.

He allegedly failed to open a case in September against a man who was arrested and handed over to him by the local neighbourhood watch in Parow Park after being found in possession of 15 Mandrax tablets, Captain Frederick van Wyk said.

The constable was also accused of altering a doctor's sick note to add an extra three days' sick leave.

Van Wyk said the doctor had confirmed that the officer was booked off sick from October 17 to November 5, and not to November 8.

The constable had been served with a notice of possible suspension.

On November 7, a Parow police station sergeant, nine constables, and a former employee were arrested for allegedly taking bribes from suspects and stealing exhibits. - Sapa
