Cape Town - A constable has been arrested on a charge of shooting a man dead in Mitchells Plain, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Tuesday.

Ipid spokesman Moses Dlamini said the 34-year-old constable was arrested in Cape Town on Monday night following an investigation.

He said it was alleged that Sharief Bester, 34, and a friend were standing in a driveway with a friend in the early hours of Monday morning when a police vehicle stopped next to them.

The two were searched and the friend was released.

Dlamini said the police did not find anything on Bester but apparently wanted to arrest him and he resisted.

“It is further alleged that the deceased was pepper-sprayed. He was then released so that he could run away,” Dlamini said.

“As he started to run, he was shot once on the back and he died on the scene.”

The constable would appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. - Sapa
