Cape Town - What started out as a fun Election Day outing for a Bonteheuwel family turned out to be an horrific experience when their car was sprayed with bullets in an alleged drive-by shooting.

The family of five were caught in a barrage of gunfire that left at least one member critically injured and the rest hurt. They were returning from a visit in Mitchells Plain when the incident occurred.

Magdie Abrahams, 52, his three boys and wife were shot at as they were about to turn into their street at around 9pm on Wednesday night.

He spoke to the Cape Argus on Thursday morning while recovering at Groote Schuur Hospital.

Magdie was shot in the left arm and his wife Shireen, 50, was shot in the mouth. Their sons were also injured with Ebrahim, 22, shot in the stomach, Masud, 14, shot in the knee and the face and Muneer, 19, with fingers shot off.

All of them were rushed to Groote Schuur hospital. Shireen is in a critical condition.

According to Magdie, Ebrahim was driving the car when a black Golf indicated that it wanted to overtake the vehicle.

"Ebrahim moved to the curb to give the Golf the opportunity to pass. My sons and wife were sitting in the back seat. My younger son was still listening to a Qasida (religious music) and had his earphones in. We were teasing him about the way he was pulling his face while he sang along. I was just about to pull out my phone and take a picture of him when the first few bullets broke the glass and hit us," he said.

Just as Ebrahim moved to the curb, the black Golf pulled up alongside him with one person hanging out from the of a back window, aiming a gun at them.

Magdie said there were at least four men in the car.

"It was the most horrible experience of my life. The man just shot at us for no reason. It happened so quickly, one moment we were joking around as a family and the next there was blood everywhere. The bullet entered my wife's left cheek and exited her right cheek. My sons are not gangsters, we are a religious family," he said.

Bishop Lavis Community Policing Forum Graham Lindhorst confirmed the incident.

"According to police, three people were shot at and it was a drive-by shooting. The mother of the family is fighting for her life in hospital. Police are not sure what caused the shooting and are investigating. It is believed that a black Golf was involved in the shooting incident," he said.

On Thursday morning, police were unable to confirm if an investigation had begun.
