A Mitchells Plain pub owner has been gunned down outside his business in what was believed to be an attempted robbery.

Calvin Goliath, the owner of Premium Sports Pub and Dagbreek Liquors in Westridge, died on arrival at hospital on Thursday morning after he was shot in his abdomen.

A passing motorist opened fire on Calvin’s two attackers in an attempt to catch them, but they got away.

The 65-year-old businessman was about to open the liquor store when he came under attack.

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk says after the shootout, the suspects fled the scene in a red VW Golf which was parked nearby.

“A murder and attempted murder case was opened for investigation. No arrests were made,” Van Wyk says.

The incident took place at about 8am in Dagbreek Avenue, Westridge.

“It is alleged the victim stopped his motor vehicle in the parking bay on the side of the road when he was approached by two unidentified men who pointed a firearm and pulled him out of his vehicle,” Van Wyk says.

“The suspects attempted to rob the victim when one of the suspects fired a single shot, wounding him.

“It is further alleged that a motorist driving past came to the victim’s assistance and he fired shots at the suspects.

“A shootout ensued and the suspects fled in a red VW Golf (jumbo) MK2 where a third suspect was waiting in a nearby street,” Van Wyk says.

On Thursday Calvin’s heartbroken son, William Goliath, 31, said his father’s wallet was missing.

He also pointed out half of a chocolate bar his father had been eating moments before the attack.

“My dad comes to open the shop at 8am every morning,” he tells Daily Voice.

“This looks like a robbery because they took his wallet.

“Three guys, including the driver, two of them came up to him and shot him.”

He says his wife, who is the manager of Calvin’s pub, found his dad.

“My wife arrived a few minutes later and she saw my father sitting on the pavement.

“He told her he couldn’t walk. She didn’t even know he was shot.”

“They rushed him to hospital where they struggled to resuscitate him, but they couldn’t,” he says.
