Johannesburg - Three men have been arrested in connection with cable theft in Belhar, the city of Cape Town said on Tuesday.

The men were caught on Sunday stealing street light cabling along the R300 highway, said spokesman Alderman Smith in a statement.

The men , aged between 27 and 41, were caught in the early hours of the morning by the city's Metals Theft Unit.

“The unit has made more than 50 arrests for cable theft and has issued fines in excess of R50 000.”

He said the city continued to spend millions of rands on repairing infrastructure damaged by vandals and cable thieves.
