Cape paedophile convictedComment on this story
Cape Town - Paedophile Johannes Kleinhans was found guilty on 95 counts, including the sexual assault of three girls, by the Parow Magistrate's Court in Cape Town on Tuesday.
The charges included indecent and sexual assault, possession of child pornography and taking pornographic photographs of the girls.
The 74-year-old, who formerly held directorships in several companies, was neatly dressed in a dark suit. He listened calmly while Magistrate Amanda van Leeve delivered judgment.
Kleinhans had initially pleaded guilty to the charges but his plea was changed to not guilty when his testimony in mitigation of sentence amounted to a denial of wrongdoing.
This was because he blamed his victims for his predicament.
Van Leeve said Kleinhans tried to give the court the impression that he was a “good and kindly old man” by showering his victims and their impoverished parents with gifts and financial assistance.
Handing down judgment, Van Leeve referred to Kleinhans' testimony that he made liquor available to the girls “to teach them the use of alcohol in a respectable manner”.
He had also made condoms and vibrators available to them.
“He told the girls it was better to use the vibrators than to have sex, but to use the condoms if they did have sex,” said Van Leeve.
She said what he did was “disgusting”, and that Kleinhans admitted that he had planned his actions carefully.
Van Leeve had seen all the photographs that Kleinhans had taken of the girls, and described them as “pornographic”.
Kleinhans lived with his wife in one house, but had converted another into a gym where he had installed exercising equipment “for the benefit of the girls”.
Van Leeve said Kleinhans gained the confidence of the girls' parents by means of financial support and gifts.
She said she had no doubt that Kleinhans was guilty of all 95 charges.
