Cape Town - Twelve people were arrested for participating in an illegal service delivery march in central Cape Town on Thursday, Western Cape police said.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said about 1 000 members of the Ses'khona People's Rights Movement gathered in the central business district around 8.30am to march to the provincial legislature.

He said police used stun grenades and a water cannon to disperse the crowd.

“Police managed to ensure that no damages to properties or injuries were reported.”

Various shops in the area closed their doors or pulled shutters down to cover their windows. Some stall owners were absent from their usual place of business.

Van Wyk said police managed to “tactically force” the protesters to move to the Cape Town train station, where they boarded trains to their homes. Police would remain in the central business district and surrounding areas.

“The situation is calm and under control at this stage.”
