Cape Town - The suburb of Belhar is on a knife’s edge as two more Sexy Boys gangsters were shot dead at the weekend, sparking fears of an all-out war in the area, with some saying gangsters were “spring cleaning”.
On Sunday night, Mogammat “Bones” du Preez was shot outside a stronghold of the notorious Sexy Boys gang in Seringa Street during a brazen attack.
Details surrounding the shooting remain sketchy, but police confirmed that a 38-year-old man was shot dead and a 30-year-old man was wounded in his ankle in the same incident.
“No one has been arrested and the motive is unknown. The circumstances are being investigated,” police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said.
Du Preez was declared dead at Tygerberg Hospital and was buried according to Muslim rites late on Monday afternoon.
Belhar residents confirmed that the house where he was killed, is known in the underworld as the “white house”.
“The house belongs to the Sexy Boys. It’s no secret that they have gang meetings there,” community leaders said.
In the other incident, Denver Louw, 44, was shot dead after answering a knock at his door in Nederburg Lane.
Police confirmed Louw was shot multiple times and died on the scene.
“Denver Louw responded to a knock on his door and someone calling his name. When he opened the door he was shot in the head, neck and shoulder and subsequently died on the scene.
“No one has been arrested and the motive is unknown. The circumstances are being investigated,” Traut said.
And the word on the street is that the Sexy Boys and those within the 26s gang, are “spring cleaning”.
The weekend gang shootings follow the death of high-ranking Sexy Boys member, Leon “Lyons” Davids, who was killed outside a friend’s house in Belhar on Wednesday.
Davids was believed to have been negotiating indemnity with national prosecuting authorities in return for fingering the masterminds behind the unsolved murder of bouncer boss Cyril Beeka.
Sources close to the Sexy Boys claimed Lyons was “set up by his own gang, who orchestrated a plot to get one of their rivals to take him out”.
And Louw, who was shot dead on Saturday night, was apparently working for Davids. Since Davids’s murder, rumours have been spreading that the hits were being arranged from within the gang.
“It’s no secret that the Sexy Boys beefed up security shortly after Colin Booysen. Now there’s been three attacks on members of the gang, and there’s been no added security,” an inside source said.
Alleged Sexy Boys boss Booysen was shot and wounded in the arm and leg outside his house in May. His brother, Jerome “Donkie” Booysen, allegedly runs the gang with him.
