A pregnant Metrorail employee was treated for smoke inhalation after three train carriages were torched in Khayelitsha, according to a report on Thursday.

The Cape Times reported that ticketing official Gwen Goluwe ran across a burning bridge to escape the fire at the Nolungile train station on Wednesday morning.

“We were sitting in the ticketing office when I started hearing people shouting, and then I smelt the smoke,” she told the newspaper.

“Everyone in the office ran out. The smoke was everywhere, so we couldn't see anything. We ran from the bridge out of the station because I was so worried that the smoke could be bad for my baby.”

She and another employee were treated by paramedics.

Metrorail spokeswoman Riana Scott said no injuries were reported. It was not clear how the fire started. - Sapa
