Minutes after an alleged drug dealer was arrested by an undercover police officer in Pretoria, he was knocked down by a car as he tried to flee through late-afternoon traffic.
A crowd gathered in Madiba Street outside the offices of the Pretoria News to catch a glimpse of the man as he lay still on the tarmac with his hands handcuffed behind his back.
According to police, the suspect was arrested on Struben Street for possession of drugs.
He and the undercover police officer were making their way back to the Pretoria Central police station when the suspect decided to make a run for it. According to the driver of the vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz, the suspect “came out of nowhere”. “He ran into the car and hit the windscreen.
“I immediately got out to check on him but he wasn’t moving. I saw the handcuffs. The undercover police officer then explained where he came from,” said the shocked motorist. “I’m just glad he is alive.”
An elderly woman fetched the man’s shoes from where they lay in the road and put them neatly beside him.
Paramedics arrived and transported the suspect to hospital. A police spokesman said he was recovering under police guard and would appear in court soon. - Saturday Star
