Johannesburg - Carl Pistorius - the brother of murder accused paralympian Oscar Pistorius - was elated about his acquittal on Tuesday on a culpable homicide charge.
His lawyer Kenny Oldwage said Pistorius and his defence team were delighted after the drawn-out court battle.
“We are satisfied with the end of it all. We are delighted,” said Oldwage shortly after the judgment.
“As for Carl, I can only say he is delighted. For more you will have to speak to him.”
The Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court also acquitted Pistorius on alternative charges of reckless or negligent driving, and driving without reasonable consideration for another person using the road.
Pistorius had pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
His bakkie collided with Maria Barnard's motorbike on March 8, 2008. She died in hospital a few days later.
Earlier, during cross-examination, the court was told that alcohol was available to the motorbikers on Barnard's ride.
Oldwage submitted that Barnard's daughter had indicated in documents before the court that her mother occasionally drank red wine and whisky, and that she was on anti-depressant medication.
Afterwards, National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Medupe Simasiku said the State had failed to prove a watertight case against Pistorius.
“We do accept the decision of the court and we will not be taking any further action on this case moving forward,” he said.
“We accept the judgment given by the court.”
Oscar Pistorius still faces a murder charge after his girlfriend, law graduate Reeva Steenkamp, was shot dead in his Pretoria home on February 14.
The world famous athlete was granted bail on February 22. The High Court in Pretoria later relaxed several conditions of this bail, including bans on travel and alcohol consumption. - Sapa
