Cape Town - A security guard collecting money from a store in the Gugulethu Square shopping centre has been robbed of his firearm.
Provincial police spokesman Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed the robbery which happened at 11.30am on Tuesday.
“The suspect confronted the guard and took his weapon and the container in which the money was stored and fled.”
Another guard then confronted the thief, who dropped the container near the gates of the Social Services offices and ran off with the firearm.
Kinana said a cash in transit heist docket had been opened.
The cash container cannot be surrendered before the guard reaches the transit vehicle without its alarm going off. It also releases dye.
A woman who asked not to be named said she was selling fruit to a customer at her stall across the road.
“We just heard people screaming and we saw a tall man dressed in a blue top with a gun and box in his hand. He ran past us and then there came a G4S (security company) truck following him. He threw the box and it exploded and he sped off.”
Siyansanga Mbalanga, who works at a store close to the mall entrance, said: “People were running and screaming. We immediately tried closing the store, but people were running inside the shops out of fear.”
Heists and robberies often happened at the mall, she said, but a spokeswoman for Gugulethu Square denied this.
