Bloemfontein - A cash-in-transit guard has been shot and wounded in a robbery in Oranjesig, Bloemfontein, Free State police said on Sunday.

He was robbed of two cases containing an undisclosed amount of cash at a filling station in Church street on Saturday morning, said Captain Chaka Marope.

“The guard was on his way to a cash van after collecting money from the filling station when he was approached by three men who were armed with pistols,” he said.

The men opened fire and the guard was shot in his leg and hip.

The driver of the cash van was held at gunpoint by another robber, who tried to throw explosive devices into the back of the van, but failed because all the door and windows were locked.

Marope said the robbers took the cases, ran to a getaway vehicle parked nearby, and fled. The vehicle was later found abandoned about 600 metres away. It had been stolen in the Wilgehof area of Bloemfontein on Thursday.

He said the wounded guard was in a serious condition in hospital. - Sapa
