Free State - A cash-in-transit vehicle was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money on Saturday morning in Vaalpark, Sasolburg, Free State police said.

Constable Peter Kareli said the Coin Security vehicle was en-route from a depot in Naledi Industrial Park to a petrol station.

It stopped at the stop sign at the corner of Paarderberg and Olifantshoek when it was hit from the side by a Toyota Land Cruser.

“One man came out of the vehicle and all of a sudden a BMW and (Volkswagen) Golf came from nowhere,” said Kareli.

He said three men came out from the other two cars carrying automatic rifles. They shot the vehicle three times. One of the robbers went to the driver's door and opened it.

“We don't know how they managed to open that door. They took two firearms from security guards, an R5 (rifle) and 9mm (pistol).”

They ran away with an undisclosed amount of money. All three vehicles had no number plates.

No injuries were reported but one security guard was grazed by a bullet.

No arrests were been made. - Sapa
