Johannesburg - A bakkie used as a getaway vehicle after an armed robbery at Carnival City casino was found abandoned at Dalpark in Brakpan on the East Rand on Monday, police said.

“It was found later after the incident. The tyre burst because police were shooting the tyres as they fled,” Captain Julia Claassen said.

Claassen said the Toyota Hilux bakkie was reported stolen at the Douglasdale police station in October last year.

Police found a hammer and the belongings of people who were robbed at the casino in the car.

She said a police reservist was in a stable condition in hospital after he was shot and wounded, along with two security guards. The guards were in a critical condition.

A group of armed men entered the casino shortly after midnight and headed to the vault. They ordered patrons to lie on the floor and used a hammer and a grinder to open the vault. The gang removed an undisclosed amount of money. Six patrons were assaulted. A shift manager called the police.

“When they tried to flee, a shootout ensued between the suspects and police, in which two security guards and one reserve officer, from Brakpan police station, were shot.”

No arrests had been made yet.

Carnival City said there were between 15 and 25 men, and that they fled in five vehicles.

“We are currently assessing the value of the money and are co-operating fully with the SAPS who are investigating the circumstances surrounding the robbery,” it said in a statement. - Sapa
