Cape Town - Armed robbers hit a jewellery shop in the upmarket Cavendish Square in Claremont on Sunday morning.

This is the second time in six months that Trigg Jewellers had been robbed.

It is believed that staff at the shop were held at gunpoint and a smoke bomb was released when the alarm was activated.

According to eye witnesses, at least four armed men barged into the store and demanded all customers to lie on the floor.

The robbers fired several shots as they left the store and made an escape.

Panicked shoppers ducked for cover as shots rang out.

The suspects escaped in a Nissan Micra. The Gauteng registration number plate was partially identified as DL86**GP.

The car’s rear window has been shattered.

Western Cape police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that a case of business robbery was under investigation.

“According to information… at about 11.30am four unidentified armed suspects robbed a jewellery shop in a shopping mall in Claremont. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount jewellery.

“No-one has been arrested at this stage. They are still at large. Anyone with any information about this incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600-10111,” Van Wyk said.

Trigg Jewellers was also hit in September last year when a gang of heavily armed robbers took jewellery from the display area in front of the shop and then ran inside and took more items.

All the gang members managed to escape.
